It does not pay for all medical services, supplies, or prescription drugs. The disparity between what is covered by Medicare and what is not covered often is called the Medicare Gap, or just the Medigap.

The cost of medical services that fall into the Medigap can be huge. Medicare Part A covers the cost of hospitalization, but the coverage comes with sizable deductibles and coinsurance amounts. Thousands of dollars can disappear into the hospitalization gap. The plan that covers routine visits, known as Medicare Part B, only pays for about 80 percent of qualifying expenses, leaving 20 percent of the costs to be paid by the Medicare recipient. Medicare Part B requires the individual to meet an annual deductible amount.
