Sacramento, Fresno, California Medicare Supplement Upheaval
As everyone knows, there is currently a lot of turmoil and uncertainty in the health insurance industry at this time. Because of the new health care reform that is going to take effect January 1, 2011, many people are wondering how this new legislation is going to affect their current health care coverage. One thing for certain is this new legislation is going to impact individuals, families, and senior citizens in particular!
Seniors citizens are going to be the first to see the impact
of this new legislation in the next couple of months. Throughout California, and especially in the San Jose, Sacramento and Fresno areas, we are seeing several major insurance carriers that handle Medicare Advantage plans pulling out of the market effective Jan. 1, 2011. Secure Horizons in Santa Cruz is pulling out of the market, leaving approximately 2,500 senior citizens without medical insurance as of Jan. 1, 2011. Other companies are also following Secure Horizon’s lead, either pulling out of the market altogether, or making major changes to their senior plans that are affecting seniors throughout the state. There are approximately 4,727 seniors in Fresno, California, losing their Medicare Advantage plan coverage, and approximately 4,892 in Sacramento, 1,755 seniors in San Diego, and 2,537 seniors in San Joaquin County losing coverage as of the first of the year. There are literally tens of thousands of senior citizens in other cities in California that are losing their Medicare Advantage plan.
I have been in the health insurance business for almost three decades, and have never seen anything quite like this! The drastic changes that are taking place now, and will be taking place in the near future are unheard of in the industry. Fortunately, my agency is well staffed and trained to handle the changes that are taking place in the next few months in the senior market. My agency has several insurance carriers we are appointed to that are offering Medicare Advantage plans that are as good as and maybe in some cases better than some of the plans that are being discontinued.
